How To Homestead Your House In Las Vegas
Did you homestead your house?
It doesn't matter if you just moved in or have been there 20 years and never bothered.
Here's why it's important in Clark County. After you record your homestead, Nevada law protects the equity in your home up to $550,000 from general creditor claims. This includes:
Unpaid medical bills
Credit card debt
Business and personal loans
Alas, homesteading does not protect you from the IRS or foreclosure.... Those guys have to be paid!
The original law came about because men would gamble away their homes in poker games.
Here's how to do it:
Download the form. Here is the link: http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/recorder/Documents/DeclarationOfHomesteadForm.pdf
Get the form notarized.
You will need the assessor's parcel number and legal description of the property. Call/text me and I can look that up for you. Or just go to the Clark County Recorder's web site.
Get a cashier's check for $17 or pay an extra couple dollars to use a credit card.
Take the form to any Clark County Recorder's office (there are three in the Valley).
You don't have to pay a service to do this for you. It's easy!
